15/05/2025 - Computer projects
I love computers, i think it's pretty obvious considering some of the stuff i talk about on here. So this blog is going to be about my little computer related projects and their progress.
For a while now, i've been wanting to get my hands on a cheap secondary laptop to try things on (and maybe distrohop) on without risking bricking my daily drivers.
It was in the back of my head a lot, but obviously not a priority. I don't make much money yet, and i have other computer related expensive projects to be working on.
But after a conversation with a friend about her Thinkpad W530, i was looking around online and found one with really good specs, way overkill for my usecase, for just 150€.
I haggled it down to 110€ because of physical damage, which shouldn't be much of a problem for me, as it won"t move much from wherever i'll set it down. It supposedly can handle up to 4 internal storage devices
which will make it great to test various distros at once for example. I'll probably post here about some of the things i end up testing on it.
I've also purchased a MegaRAID SAS 9261-8i RAID Controller that i have received tuesday. These come extremely cheap second hand on ebay from china, and it'll be put in my main desktop along two 8tb WD drives.
I plan to set them up as a Raid 1, and then maybe eventually move them into a proper NAS i plan to build eventually, though that is a long shot for now.
I'll probably also blogpost about how that installation goes. I do not yet have the drives or the cables, but i plan on getting them when my next pay drops, which should be in a couple of weeks at most.
Future projects include aforementioned NAS, a proper hoarding server and something to do with my old desktop (maybe these two end up being the same thing ?), hosting this website locally, a proper local DNS...
I'm probably forgetting some, and multiple ideas may end up being the same machine or not... Hard to tell for now. I like to keep things separate, but it feels stupid to have a server to host games and a whole other
separate device hosting the website for example.
Idk. much to think about. I'll probably be updating this when i receive the laptop, or maybe just post in the comment section.
I haven't been blogposting lots, as i'm trying to make these somewhat interesting enough and more on the longer side... I actually want these to be proper insteresting reads.
I've also been going outside and getting more of a social life, which is kind of a surprising developpement for me, but a welcome one.
anyhow, thanks for reading, have a nice day/night/whatever!
